A Break from Life's Treadmill

Here we are in the routines of our lives, getting up, going to work, watching our shows, buying our groceries, calling our friends, nagging our kids about homework. It's easy to do this over and over without thinking very hard and without shaking things up. We get up, we do our thing, we go to bed.

That's life, you may say. It's busy, we have responsibilities, we eke out pleasure where we can, and really there's no need to overthink.

I've certainly spent oodles of time living this way during various phases of my life.

But eventually we start hearing a call to get off the treadmill for a bit and take stock. This call may come in the form of job dissatisfaction, general restlessness, an illness, a tragedy, a birthday, a vacation, a book you read, even a simple conversation.

I work with people who are off the treadmill and are seriously taking stock. This is not a comfortable place to be for most of us. It's exciting, it's scary, and it's interesting, but it's not comfortable.

People who are starting to take stock about their careers are asking themselves these kinds of questions:

  • What's fun about my job?
  • What about my career is even a little bit satisfying?
  • When will be the right time to stop doing this job and start doing something else?
  • When am I going to make the time to do what I really want to be doing?
  • Where is this career leading me?
  • Do I want to go where this career is leading me?
  • Where do I want to go instead?

Even if you're happy on your treadmill, what if you took five minutes right now and asked yourself a couple of these questions?

If this has you intrigued, read this article about keeping the end in mind as you plan your career.
