eBossWatch Provides Place to Find Out About Bad Bosses
Are you considering a job offer and wish you knew more about your prospective boss?
Do you work for a boss that you wish you could warn others about?
Enter eBossWatch, a new website that allows people to rate their current or former bosses.
To leave feedback, you anonymously complete a six-question, multiple choice survey about your boss. To find feedback, you enter the boss's name and city.
Asher Adelman, the founder of eBossWatch, tells me that the idea behind the site is that job applicants can use it as a resource to help spot any warning signs before they accept an offer.
If they see on eBossWatch that their prospective boss has some negative ratings, it can serve as a red flag and will prompt them to ask more questions.
Asher asked for my feedback on his site, the highlights of which I'll share here:
- There are too many bad bosses out there who can make life hell for people. We all know bosses that are allowed to continue doing their bad boss thing, costing the company a lot of money, driving away good people and wasting everyone's time. This site is an intriguing concept.
- The statements that you rate on the site would be more effective if they were about your boss's actions, rather than how you felt about you and your boss's relationship. If I were a job applicant reviewing a prospective boss's ratings, I would learn more if I read things like she didn't give reviews on time and she didn't meet with her people regularly than if I learned that some raters didn't feel like she cared about them as a person.
- Good bosses need kudos and advertising - hopefully site users would use eBossWatch to applaud the great bosses and spread the word about them.
- Yes, there are bad bosses, but there are also terrible employees. (My HR background is showing!) I may not give much credence to anonymous complaints, especially when I can't learn any of the details in the raters' own words. Grain of salt time.
Still I appreciated Asher's point that viewing the ratings is a starting place for further investigation.
So tell me, what do you think?
Are you going to rate your boss?
Are you featured on the site yourself?
